Introducing Children Desiring God/T:78

Reminder: Children Desiring God (CDG) changed to Truth 78 (T:78) several years ago, but retained their staff, mission & vision, and curriculum. Everything we love about CDG is STILL true at T:78! See all their details here.

As we draw closer to the new school year beginning, we’re beginning to ramp up our Fall programs, and that means getting back Sunday school! This year, we’ve decided to use a new curriculum by Children Desiring God, a ministry from Minneapolis, MN which produces “God-centered curriculum for training the next generation.” We are so excited and thrilled for our youth to be digging deep into God’s Word to learn more about who He is and how He is calling them!

Here are a few introductions to catch your interest. First up is an introduction the Children Desiring God and their vision for Christian education:

Parents, are you wondering what to think about this curriculum? Here’s a video for you:

Hopefully this grabs your attention, and makes you excited for what God might be pleased to do at Zion in the next Sunday school year. Questions? Want to get involved? Contact the church or drop us an email! Rally Sunday begins on the second Sunday in September.

What Makes A Good Church?

There are all sorts of communions and groups that call themselves a “church” these days. Anyone with a building and marquee can slap the label “church” on their door. But how do we know if a group that calls themselves a “church” is being biblical or not?

Knowing what to look for in a church is important. When you’re on vacation, you need to know how to find a good church to worship in on Sundays. And at Zion, we want to be both biblical and easily recognizable for others who are looking for a biblical church. Alistair Begg, pastor of Parkside Church and founder of Truth for Life Ministries, lays out what Scripture says a biblical church ought to look like. As you read, prayerfully consider how God may be urging Zion to go in a more biblically faithful direction, and how you can be on the lookout for “good” churches.

Finding A Good Church

by Alistair Begg

“Where should I go to church?” New believers seeking a church home, longtime Christians relocating to an unfamiliar place—and even those well entrenched in a particular church—must face this question head-on. The decision is perplexing because so much of what passes for “church” today isn’t really church, at least not as the New Testament presents it to us. If you are seeking a church home, the only place to discover what really matters is in the Bible. Acts 2:42-47 offers us a blueprint for church life:

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved” (NIV).

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching”

The first thing we discover about this early church is a commitment to the teaching of the apostles. Today we have this very same teaching in the Bible. Nothing is as important as this—not a large congregation, a witty pastor or tangible experiences of the Holy Spirit. The Bible is God’s supreme instrument for renewing His people in the image of Jesus. The entire Book of Acts is full of the centrality of preaching. Continue reading “Finding a Good Church”…

Biblical Wallpapers for August

If you’re on the computer a lot, a well managed wallpaper (the image you see on your desktop background) can get a few jobs done for you. Tim Challies provides fresh and original wallpapers for each month that helps you keep track of your days and provides food for your soul.

Each wallpaper displays a stylish calendar specific to the month (optional) as well as a gorgeous theme or concept design to accent your computer screen. For example, here’s the wallpaper I’m planning on using highlighting the soul-stirring truth found in Isaiah 43 (calendar removed):
Or, here’s an example from Revelation 22:

There are plenty more to choose from, and once you’ve picked your favorite for August, go back through other months and find some you’d like to keep. Enjoy!

Thinking God’s Thoughts on the Fourth of July

Rev. Rick Phillips, writing for Reformation21, has some excellent thoughts for Christians with the upcoming holiday. Take a moment to read his insights.

Thoughts on Christian Patriotism

by Rick Phillips
On July 4, our nation celebrates its independence with waving flags, picnics, and parades. Some churches deck their sanctuary with red, white, and blue, and devote the worship service to the honor of the state. Other Christians virtually ignore this or any other national holiday. This raises the question, “How does Christianity tell us to think about patriotism?” … I am probably not typical in that my conversion to faith in Jesus Christ, which occurred when I was 30 years old, required me immediately to recast my ideas of patriotism. At first, I was tempted to reject the idea of patriotism altogether, since I had been transferred out of the world into the kingdom of Jesus Christ. However, even though my relationship with Jesus greatly altered my attitude towards flag and country, I soon realized that there is a Christian patriotism that believers should feel towards their country… Let me point out patriotic views and attitudes that Christians must reject [and should accept]. “Higher Love” Bible Supplements for Marriage

Our “Higher Love” class, which meets to “Discover God’s Design for Your Marriage,” is based around a DVD series that we’ll watch as a small group, and is one of our summer ministries we’re focusing on this year. There will be a lot different aspects of Christian marriage to discuss, but sometimes it is helpful to dig a little deeper into God’s Word on your own to supplement what you’re learning in the small group. If you’d like more, check out our Bible Supplement (under Curriculum) and download Scripture readings and discussion questions that correspond to each chapter. Questions about the material or accessing it? Send us a message!

The “Higher Love” class will begin Sunday evening, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. We hope to see you!
