Sex Before Marriage: How Far is Too Far?

One of the most important issues Christian young people can decide on today is how they are going to maintain their purity – moral, spiritual, and of course, sexual – in an increasingly impure culture.

Sex Before Marriage: How Far is Too Far?
Tim Lane

“We love each other and are faithful to each other, so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having sex before we get married.”

“Isn’t it a good idea to see if we’re sexually compatible before we get married?”

“Don’t make sex before marriage into such a big deal— everyone does it.”

“I’m not going to let other people make me feel guilty just because I don’t buy into their value system.”

Have you ever thought or said things like this? If your answer is yes, you have a lot of company. Most people, at least in some circumstances, think premarital sex is okay. What was once frowned upon is now an accepted part of Western culture, and sex education usually means learning about “safe sex,” and how to take steps to avoid unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. But you have probably noticed that education about “safe sex” hasn’t protected those around you from experiencing hurt and broken relationships as they have experimented sexually. Since God made you and also created sex, why not take the time to look at what he has to say about your sexuality and how it should be expressed? You may be surprised at what you learn.

Christians haven’t always done a very good job talking about sex. Some avoid the topic all together, and others give the impression that sex is somehow inherently degrading and tainted. But God, in the Bible, doesn’t avoid the topic of sex or say that it is bad. Instead, God has a positive view of sex and also specific guidelines about how to express your sexuality. God is not a kill- joy—his guidelines for your sexuality are for your help, protection, and good.

What God Thinks About Sex
While the church has not always addressed the issue of sex in helpful ways, the Bible does. The most realistic, hopeful, and wise handling of sex is found there. You can always count on the Bible’s realism and directness. Biblical writers never shy away from controversial topics. They teach that the physical world is good and give guidance on how to rightfully enjoy it. This is true of sex as well. Continue reading

Iowa 4Cs Family Day: August 27!

This summer, the 4Cs congregations in Iowa will be gathering for a day of fellowship and fun at Jordan Park Camp on August 27, 2011. This will be a fantastic opportunity, not only to enjoy the wonderful facilities at Jordan Park Camp, but also to strengthen relationships with other congregation members and pastors in the 4Cs, to meet new people, and enjoy the glory of the Lord’s creation. Get August 27th on the calendar right now, because our summers fill up so fast, and we don’t want you to miss this special opportunity!

Jordan Park Camp is located in West Des Moines (2251 Fuller Road West Des Moines, IA 50265 [map]), just fifteen minutes away from the amenities of the city, and yet cozily tucked away in its own campground setting removed the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Its ideal for getting together with friends new and old and enjoying the outdoors together.

Hopefully there will be all sorts of opportunities to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation during this day, but we’ll also have the privilege of enjoying fellowship with church members, as well as getting to know “the communion of saints” in our Iowa area. We pray that the Lord will use some conversations to create relationships that might last a lifetime, and use the fellowship we enjoy on these kinds of days to spread the Kingdom in Christ-centered ministry.

So be sure to join us! More details will be coming, and keep an eye here as the details become available. In the meantime, be sure to mark Aug. 27th on your calendars, and we’ll see you all then!

Higher Love: God’s Design for Your Marriage

One of the key truths we have seen portrayed time and time again in our study of Colossians is that God’s grace begins to affect our vocations. Not least of all these is that our marriages are to be understood “in Christ” (Colossians 3:18 – 4:1), and the vertical power of grace placarded in the Cross is now translated out into our horizontal relationships between husband and wife.

But in a world and culture that does not value marriage, and in a time when the knowledge of what Biblical marriage looks like is at a low point, we all need help to faithfully obey Scripture’s commands for husband and wife to live out the picture of the Gospel-love between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:23 – 30). That is where Higher Love comes into play. Getting together with small groups of other married couples, you’ll have the opportunity to witness biblical truths with your spouse, discuss these concepts in an encouraging environments, and then take home principles that you’ve learned for walking by the Spirit in marriage.

Interested in joining? We’d love to have you! Contact the church for more details about this powerful opportunity to see the Lord of Hosts go to work on your marriage. The class will meet various Sunday evenings.

Summer Bible Study: Tough Questions

As believers of Holy Scripture, there are a lot of challenging questions that confront Christians.

  • “Why does the Apostles’ Creed mention Pontius Pilate?”
  • “Is suicide the unforgivable sin?”
  • “What will the end times be like?”
  • “Why does God command war in the Old Testament?”
  • “Why should I pray if God already knows everything?”
  • “Can I really believe the Bible is true about everything?”

On and on, the questions continue. Where can you go to get a straight answer to these tough questions?

Summers can get hectic. Between getting the kids to baseball practice, the pool, and getting away for vacation, committing to a Bible study in the summer can seem daunting. But our summer Bible study will be unique each week, and so if you miss a week, join us next time and you won’t feel like you’ve missed anything or that you’re behind.

On Wednesdays, we’ll gather for prayer, fellowship, and looking closely at God’s Word to understand what the Lord says to His faithful followers by the power of the Holy Spirit. We hope you’ll be able to join us at 7p.m. for a refreshing time of being spiritually encouraged to live in the power Jesus Christ provides His pilgrim people. Come join us!

10 Things Submission Is Not

We have recently been looking at how God’s powerful grace can transform our lives, especially our families, in our sermon series on Colossians. The same power of God that raised Jesus to life on Easter Sunday is the same powerful grace that has raised us to new spiritual life (Colossians 3:1 – 4). This regenerating power is now in turn at work on our families. When we came to Colossians 3:18, about how wives are to submit to their husbands in the Lord, we looked at several ways not to submit. In that same spirit, here are 10 things that submission is not:

  1. Simply or singularly a marriage issue
  2. Degrading
  3. Silent
  4. Continue reading
