Giving Up the NFL to Follow Christ

Chris Norman was ranked as high as third best linebacker in the country. The NFL was the next step in his future. But all that changed, because of the glory of Christ.

Does Chris’s decision shock you? Would you be willing to give up a life of fame, celebrity, and material success if Jesus asked you to take a different path?

Are you interested in where Chris is now? Read his article, “Why I Said No to the NFL,” where he deals with the following questions:

  • Did I have to quit football?
  • How did I know this is what God wanted?
  • Did I ever question my decision?
  • My prayer for you, the reader

“Football is a game that is filled with passion, intensity, and effort. Football can be a safe haven that propels character development in young men. And football is a gift from God that has been graciously given for millions upon millions of people to enjoy… I wanted to obey, which is the real drive under it all. By God’s grace, I have been saved. Therefore, I make it my aim to please him because it’s in his will that I will find the most rest, comfort, and joy. As I searched my heart, read my Bible, listened to counselors, and watched God work in my life, I became convinced the field he wanted me on was no longer the gridiron.”

Worship: Focusing on Christ, Not Musical Preference

Christianity Today interviewed theologian, author, pastor, and former Covenant Seminary president Bryan Chapell about one of his recent books, Christ-Centered Worship.Bryan-Chapell Dr. Chapell helps point us away from our personal preferences, and ask for God’s preference of glorifying Jesus to be the main thing when we gather for worship. You can read this article at the CT site here.

What is—and is not—Christ-centered worship?

Christ-centered worship is not just talking or singing about Jesus a lot. Christ-centered worship reflects the contours of the gospel. In the individual life of a believer, the gospel progresses through recognition of the greatness and goodness of God, the acknowledgment of our sin and need of grace, assurance of God’s forgiveness through Christ, thankful acknowledgment of God’s blessing, desire for greater knowledge of him through his Word, grateful obedience in response to his grace, and a life devoted to his purposes with assurance of his blessing.

In the corporate life of the church this same gospel pattern is reflected in worship. Opening moments offer recognition of the greatness and goodness of God that naturally folds into confession, assurance of pardon, thanksgiving, instruction, and a charge to serve God in response to his grace in Christ. This is not a novel idea but, in fact, is the way most churches have organized their worship across the centuries. Only in recent times have we lost sight of these gospel contours and substituted pragmatic preferences for Christ-centered worship. My goal is to re-acquaint the church with the gospel-shape of its worship so that we are united around Christ’s purposes rather than arguing about stylistic preferences.

How does liturgy facilitate corporate worship in a Sunday morning service?

Liturgy is simply another term for the order of worship. Every church has a liturgy, although it may vary from being quite simple to very ornate. Understanding the gospel-shape of worship allows us to make Christ-centered choices about how the aspects of each church’s liturgy—an opening song, a prayer of confession, or a benediction—are furthering the gospel message in our services. There is no “one right way” to acknowledge the goodness and greatness of God. But knowing that the beginning of the service has this goal allows us to make appropriate liturgical choices about the songs sung, the scriptures read, and/or the prayers offered in the opening phases of a worship service. The same will be true for those aspects of worship that involve confession, assurance, thanksgiving, etc.

What encourages you about contemporary worship trends?

The most enduring and edifying worship is a combination of rootedness and reach. Continue reading

Pray for Our Summer Youth Mission Trip!

YouthWorksTomorrow morning at 5:45 a.m., our young people and leaders will close up the vans and start their drive to West Virginia. What an opportunity! What a challenge!

Our Zion team will be working to serve young and old, the well off and those struggling with poverty, and by building relationships and buildings. Pray for the Lord’s power to lead and guide, that everyone would draw close to Christ, and that they would return on fire for the Lord! Pray that the Gospel of Jesus would be central, and that each of them would seek to become more and more shaped by Jesus. Here are some suggestions for how to pray each day:

  • Saturday: Spirit to prepare hearts, provide protection, grant unity
  • Sunday: Safe travels and deep worship on the journey
  • Monday: Great relationships with Youthworks teams
  • Tuesday: W. VA residents to see God’s love in youth
  • Wednesday: The Spirit’s power to open hearts and eyes
  • Thursday: Stronger relationships in the teams
  • Friday: Joy from the experience, fruitful farewells
  • Saturday: Travel mercies and pure minds back home

May God be glorified in the lives of our youth!

Fuel After Father’s Day

fathers-dayAfter the grill cools down, the new tie is hung on the rack, and the sunscreen has worn off, Father’s Day has come and gone. Dads can be blessed to receive a real shot of encouragement from this special day, but fathers (and all of us!) need God’s power to sustain us for the other 364 days of the year. Here are some resources to keep fuel in your tank even after Father’s Day.

7 Ways Fathers Provoke Their Children

There’s no shortage of parenting books out there. But you’ll find very few dedicated to the subject of fathering. What does it look like to father well?

Thankfully, God’s word includes much guidance for fathers. The Bible is filled with good dads (starting with God the Father) and bad dads (starting with Adam, our first father). Proverbs is in large part a collection of wisdom written by a dad to his son. In his letters to Timothy and Titus, Paul offers profound direction as a spiritual father.Provoke_ResurgenceTemplate2

Fathers, we have a sacred responsibility.

Elsewhere in Scripture, Paul warns fathers: “Do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4). Dads, this is our God-given job description.

9 Things You Should Know About Fathers and Father’s Day

1. After listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash. wanted a special day to honer her father, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm. The first Father’s Day celebration, June 17, 1910, was proclaimed by Spokane’s mayor because it was the month of Smart’s birth.

2. The first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Father’s Day has been celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent.

21 Simple Ways to Be An Exceptional Dad

ExceptionalDadResurgenceTemplate2
I don’t want to be a good dad—I want to be a great dad.

But the longer I live and more ministry I do, the more I have come to realize there are precious few examples of grace in action when it comes to fatherhood. So on this Father’s Day, I wanted to take a moment, heed Paul’s exhortation (Eph. 6:1), and honor my own father, Greg.

Was he perfect? Nope.
Did he make mistakes? Sure.
Does he wish he could do things differently? I have no idea.

But in a land where few men finish well when it comes to the daunting task of fatherhood, I’ve found myself reflecting and marveling at the grace of God in my dad’s life. He loved Jesus, repented often, and poured his life into his two sons. How much more could a boy ask for?

In your life, Dad, I have found a roadmap for my own role as father. So I wanted to take a few moments, and tell you thanks from the heart of a grateful son. Specifically, thank you for . . .

1. Never putting me down
Not once. You never made fun of me, mocked me, or talked about me like I wasn’t there.

What Makes Dad Special

All around the world, dads are special today. Father’s Day is the third Sunday of June in the United States and more than 80 nations. It is fitting that we not only annually honor moms on Mother’s Day, but our fathers as well.

God’s good design is for both moms and dads, and for their appreciation and honor, whether old covenant (Exodus 20:12) or new (Ephesians 6:2). It takes man and woman, father and mother, to image God to a child. “God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27).

Scripture tells us that God is like a Father to His children…

Learning Fatherhood from the Father of Fatherhood

God’s Fatherhood is the archetype of human fatherhood, a point made even more explicit in Hebrews 12:7–10. What that means for us fathers today is that we take our cues on fatherhood from the Father of Fatherhood, which is a great relief for any father today who was fathered by a sinful or absent father (which of course includes every one of us).

But what’s the point of this? … The most obvious feature of the Father of Jesus Christ is His generosity… He is generous with everything. Is there anything He has that he has held back? And what should we — tangible fathers — be like? The question is terribly hard to answer, but not because it is difficult to understand.
