Missions Fest 2013

MissionsFest13Join us on September 29 to worship the Lord of the Nations who is saving a people from every tribe, tongue and nation! This year we will be joined by Brent Howland from International Messengers to learn about what the Lord is doing through His sent ones, and how Christ’s Spirit is incorporating us into His mission as well!

Here’s the schedule for Sunday:
9:15 | Sunday school. Brent Howland will be speaking to the adult classes.
10:30 | Worship. Brent will be preaching in the worship service.
11:45 | Potbless meal. Bring food for fellowship and get a chance to ask Brent any questions you might have!

InternationalMessengersCircle 1 will be serving during the Potbless meal. Don’t let not bringing food be a hindrance – there is always enough for everyone! Be sure to invite friends and family as you join us, and pray to the Lord of the Harvest that He would send out His laborers and stir our hearts to great things for His glory!

See you Sunday!

See You At The Pole 2013

SYATP_green_2013Since 1990, students have been gathering around the flagpole at their local schools to lift up their hearts and voices to the Lord in prayer for See You At The Pole. Students will gather at GHV High School on Wednesday, September 25 at 7am (High School) and 7:30 (Elementary) to pray for their fellow students, teachers, and nation.

“In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice”
Psalm 5:3

Students, make sure you set your alarm early and join us! Parents, prayerfully encourage your students to attend, and then pray for them as well. Bring your friends, and we’ll see you bright and early!

Picking Up the Old Hymns Once Again

Not too long ago we ran resources on songs and hymns. A commenter pointed out that one of the links is not working, so here is the article republished for you! Enjoy!

Why Young People Are Returning To Old Hymn Texts

by Kevin Twit

Not too long ago I saw a sign in an antique store: “My grandmother saved it, my mother threw it away, and now I’m buying it back!” That little sign captures the story of church music in the last fifty years. In my work as a pastor with college students, I have been taking note of what feels like the beginning of a movement.antique_collection

There is most definitely a hunger and longing among the emerging generations, college students and twenty-somethings, to connect with something real and solid rather than the faddish and ephemeral. Books like Robert Webber’s The Younger Evangelicals (Baker, 2002) and Colleen Carroll’s The New Faithful (Loyola Press, 2002) well document this phenomenon. Recently a college student posted this letter on a website in response to an article on hymns.

Coming from a typical praise chorus- reliant high school youth group . . . I didn’t understand a lot of the poetic and imagery-driven lyrics, and the word hymn automatically meant boring music. But I found myself falling in love with the old hymns. . . . The words are so profound and full of truth one can’t help but be broken. Singing hymns has seriously changed my life and freed me from feeling frustrated by surface lyrics that focus on how I feel about God, which is always changing. Hymns have allowed me to center my worship on the Gospel, which in turn compels me to love the God I am prone to hate and wander from.

What thrills me is to see how her discovery of hymns has affected even the way she expresses what she finds in her heart—“Come Thou Fount” has helped orient her to a richer view of what the Christian life actually feels like! Continue reading

Reminder: New Schedule At Zion Tomorrow!

Don’t forget that we have a new schedule at Zion tomorrow!

Worship

On September 15, we return to our “normal” schedule of having Sunday school at 9:15, and worship at 10:30. If you joined us for our Rally Sunday last week, your kids are registered and (hopefully!) thrilled to learn about the Lord first thing tomorrow morning. Worship will begin at 10:30, highlighting meeting Christ through His Word and the sacrament of Holy Communion. This will be our normal schedule now through the rest of the school year.

Don’t forget that our Pastor/Parish Committee is hosting a coffee fellowship! It will last from 10am until 10:30. Spend time with our church family!

Men’s Ministry Breakfast

MenMinistry_MediumCalling all men! Before the above events take place, be sure to join us for our monthly Men’s Ministry Breakfast. We’re currently working through the Stepping Up materials. Its proven challenging in the past – join us to be challenged in your faith!

Youth Progressive Dinner

ZionProgressiveDinner
All Jr. & Sr. High students are invited with their friends to join us at church at 4pm for our progressive dinner. We will be partnering with Garner Evangelical Free Church also, so it is sure to be an excellent opportunity. Check out the details and plan to eat your fill and be fed spiritually as well!
