Happy Mother’s Day 2016!

With Hands She Tasted Loss

large_with-hands-she-could-not-see-rdgl6ayaWe know that Mary was more blest
Than any mother — gave her breast
To give him life who gave her breath
And with his life chose, freely, death.

We know what Mary pondered when
She saw him, unlike other men,
Without a single flaw. “I am
The mother of a spotless Lamb.”

The words of Simeon were etched
Deep in her soul, nor could be stretched
To lose their sting, as if the sword
He prophesied did not accord

With her worst dreams. “This child is set
To heal and wound the world. And yet,
Not he alone, but you the toll
Must pay. A sword will pierce your soul.”

Her Children Arise And Call Her Blessed

large_her-children-arise-and-call-her-blessedMother’s Day is a sweet opportunity for Christians to celebrate one of God’s most significant means of his common and redeeming grace.

For most, there’s some bitter flavor somewhere. We live in a fallen world. All mothers are sinful — even Jesus’s own mother knew well her need for a Savior (Luke 1:47) and for God’s mercy (Luke 1:50). Whether your own mother monumentally failed you, or you’re a mother who’s all too aware of how you’ve failed your children, there is goodness and grace to acknowledge and appreciate in almost every situation, even when deeply tarnished by sin.

But for many of us, our hearts soar in thanksgiving when God brings to mind our mothers and grandmothers, or our wife, the mother of our children. Among those of us raised in believing homes — in which our parents were faithful in teaching and modeling the faith — we may enjoy, all the more, the priceless privilege of fulfilling Proverbs 31:28 on Mother’s Day: “Her children rise up and call her blessed.”

Understanding The Kingdom of God

Kingdom-of-GodLast Sunday, we looked at Jesus’ teaching to pray, “Your Kingdom come…” (Matthew 6:10). But what is the Kingdom? As promised, below is every reference to the Kingdom of God in the New Testament that tells us what it is like. Prayerfully study these verses, and consider how the Lord is calling you to walk worthy of His Kingdom, and to pray for its coming in your life!

The Kingdom of God is…

Requires repentance (Matt 3:2)

Where God’s perfectly just decisions are recorded (II Thess. 1:5)

Coming from heaven to earth (Matt 6:10)

A promised blessing He gives to those who love Him (Jam 2:5)

Not valued or observed by the world (Luke 17:20)

Not of this world (John 18:36)

Mainly about righteousness, peace, joy, the Holy Spirit (Rom 14:17)

A blessing to the obedient, but condemning to disobedient (Matt 5:19)

Not divided, but unified on Christ (Mk 3:24)

Overcoming the kingdoms of the world (Rev 11:15)

Imminent in this world (Matt 3:2) Continue reading
