Passion 2016: The Antagonists

AntagonistsIn the weeks leading up to Easter this year, we want to make sure we “keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). As we ponder the enemies our Savior destroyed at the Cross, we will study “The Antagonists” as we gather with the other congregations in town. We all face enemies, and our spiritual antagonists are some of the most important problems. Our series will help us ponder these truths.

Unless otherwise noted, all services will be held at 7pm at the host church, with light refreshments and fellowship afterwards. An offering will be taken each Sunday: Garner Ambulance Fund (Feb 28th), 5 Loaves (Mar 20), Church Help Fund (Mar 13th), and God’s Pantry (Mar 6th). Questions? Call the church office.

Support Urban Plunge In Prayer!

urbanplungeLater today, several families and individuals from Zion will be heading to Des Moines, IA, to work with Urban Plunge (CFCI) ministries. We want to support our brothers and sisters in Christ, and spread a passion for reaching out in His love and mercy.

Why would people sacrifice a weekend out of their life, leave the comfort of their homes, and go serve in the Lord’s mission among people who are very different from us? Because of how great our missionary God is! We serve our Lord Jesus, who sacrificed not just a weekend, but gave His life. We worship the Son of God, who didn’t just leave his four-bedroom rambler, He left the glories of heaven to rescue us on earth! We follow the Prince of Peace, who doesn’t just serve people who are different from Him, He serves His enemies and ransoms them from every tribe, tongue, and nation (Revelation 5:9)! And when we follow Christ, He calls us to follow Him.

Pray!

Even if you didn’t go with the Urban Plunge team, you can still be a part of their mission by supporting them in prayer. On Friday, pray for safety in logistics, planning, and travel to the Des Moines destination. Tonight, they will be going to the Children and Family Urban Movement (CFUM), which works amidst one of the poorest, and more racially and ethnically diverse neighborhoods in Des Moines. The mission of CFUM is to create a community that supports children, youth and their families through education, healthy living and community engagement. Pray that God would use them in the “Haven” after-school program, and give each team member the right words to say as they interact with people over meals, cleaning, and other service. Lastly, pray that God would open their hearts through the “Letter to a Prisoner” program, remembering that Christians have a special ministry to those in chains (Hebrews 13:3).

On Saturday, pray that the Lord would provide a deep sense of spiritual growth during devotions, journaling time, and the Prayer Walk. Pray for the team as they interact with several local agencies, like the Des Moines Area Religious Council, which works to meet basic human needs through the distribution of food. They work with over 130 congregations from 4 different faith traditions to “Move the Food” all over Des Moines. They will also work with the DMCW community, which opens their church homes for those in need of food, clothing, bedding, a shower, or a cup of coffee and conversation. They engage in activities that foster social justice, and our team will help distribute bags of vegetables to the poor. The team will also work with DMARC, the “Thankful Leper,” Joppa Outreach, and Meals From The Heartland. Pray that as the team debriefs over what they witnessed and experienced, that the Spirit of the Lord would grant wisdom to understand what they’ve been given.

On Sunday, pray that the team would be able to sleep, grow in Christ through worship at Corinthian Baptist Church, and then receive travel mercies as they return home.

Support!

There are so many ways to support missions at Zion. You can give financially. You can go. You can pray. But more important than what you do to support the mission of God, is to make sure that you do support it!

Do you want to serve the Lord through missions? Contact us or get in touch with our Mission & Outreach committee. Let us take up our cross and follow Christ as we joyfully proclaim His excellencies for all to hear!

Live In Love in 2016! Valentine Resources

valentine_banner2016This Valentine’s Day, we want to love one another well because of how God has loved us in Christ by His Spirit! To help you do that, here are several resources, events, and more for you!

Tripp: The Invitation To Love

tripp_the_invitation_to_lovePaul Tripp is an amazing communicator, pastor, and counselor. But what is really amazing about him is that he is captured by the beauty of the Gospel of Christ and has a passion for connecting that to our lives. He is connecting the power of the Gospel to our romantic relationships in The Invitation to Love, and you can download the entire resource for free!

The Key To Marriage Longevity

Ligonier Ministries for Marriage

Ligonier Ministries provides several resources. Pastor and theologian R. C. Sproul explains from Scripture for “The Intimate Marriage.”

On top of that, it is important to think about what is true love. Burk Parsons reminds us that, “God is love, and love never fails because God never fails. Love cannot be separated from God and cannot exist without Him… Although the world, the flesh, and the Devil would love to strip love of all its beauty and character in order to make it adaptable to every conceivable context and theology, such would be a futile attempt. For just as God defines God, God defines love.” Think with Rev. Parsons how God’s love shapes our marital love on Valentine’s Day! Continue reading

Tachicks Bring The Power of God

Tachick_Wycliffe2Chris and Elizabeth Tachick work with Wycliffe Bible Translators to bring the power of God’s Word to people who don’t have easy access to Scripture in their own language. Chris is an old friend of Pastor Brian from their TBI days, where they apprenticed at Bethlehem Baptist Church under the leadership of John Piper.

The Tachicks have accepted an assignment to assist Bible translators in Nigeria, and Chris is eager to serve as a translation consultant-in-training once their ministry budget is met. They are excited to serve these teams, in the strength that God supplies! Nigerians are eager to access the Bible in the language they know best, and there is an exciting Bible translation movement underway.

The Tachicks will be at Zion on January 24. Chris will be teaching the adult Sunday school classes and introducing their ministry during the worship service. Then, come back at 4pm for fellowship as the Tachick’s teaching on translation issues for our modern world. Chris will be speaking on how issues such as how to get the best Bible translations, understanding Bible translations for yourself, and issues dealing with Muslim contexts like translating the word “Allah.”

Pray with them that the word of the Lord would run and be glorified (2 Thess 3:1). See their personal website for more!

Sermon: Fellowship Foundation from Acts 4

In our sermon series “Foundations 2016: Christ’s Church” we look to God’s Word to see how God’s people ought to live in God’s Church! In Acts 4, we see a people devoted to the things Jesus is devoted to. Are you living a life that is devoted to the “koinonia” fellowship of Christians, or more of the secular individualism of our culture? Jesus speaks by His Spirit to find life in fellowship!
