How to Stop Gossip

gossip-300x323Justin Taylor points out some fantastic resources for dealing with gossip that infects our relationships, churches, and ministries.

A good reminder is helpful for the difference between gossip and flattery. Rev. Dr. Kent Hughes explains the difference:

Gossip involves saying behind a person’s back what you would never say to his or her face.

Flattery means saying to a person’s face what you would never say behind his or her back.

Once we have this in mind, here are five questions to ask to deflate gossip before it can balloon into a problem:

  1. Why are you telling me this?
  2. What is the difference between this and gossip?
  3. How is what you’re telling me going to help us love God and our brothers better, and knit us closer together as a church in Christ’s love?
  4. Now that you’ve told me about this, what are you going to do about it?
  5. Now that you’ve told me about that, you’ve morally obligated me to make sure you talk to ____ about it. How long do you think you need, so I can know when this becomes a sin that I will need to confront in you?

Read the article here for a full explanation of each question, and how to practically use them when someone shares information with you that might be gossip

And secondly, Ray Ortlund points out why gossip is so tempting for us:

Gossip is our dark moral fervor eagerly seeking gratification.

Gossip makes us feel important and needed as we declare our judgments.

It makes us feel included to know the inside scoop.

It makes us feel powerful to cut someone else down to size, especially someone we are jealous of.

It makes us feel righteous, even responsible, to pronounce someone else guilty.

Gossip can feel good in multiple ways. But it is of the flesh, not of the Spirit.

. . . Gossip is a sin rarely disciplined but often more socially destructive than the sensational sins.

Gossip leaves a wide trail of devastation wherever and however it goes – word of mouth, email, blogging, YouTube.

It erodes trust and destroys morale.

Read his whole article for more problems with gossip, as well as what to do about it.

May the sin of gossip be destroyed and not even named in Christ’s Church, and may tough and tender grace be the tool the Spirit uses to eradicate the infection!

Pray for Our Haiti Team!

HarvestHaiti_FrontAs several from our church and community head to Haiti on February 9 – 16, please keep them in your prayers! Use the following as suggestions for how to pray:
Saturday
Pray for travel mercies, and a soft heart to what God is going to do.

Sunday
Pray for genuine, heart worship even in a different culture! Pray for unity with the Haitian Christians.

Monday
Pray for strength to acclimate and work diligently even in foreign places, that God would supply the strength in the heat.

Tuesday
Pray for relationships – to be strengthened in Christ’s love. Pray that God would be glorified in the unity the team displays.

Wednesday
Pray for endurance to finish strong and not become discouraged. Pray that God would encourage and provide spiritual power in amazing ways!

Thursday
Pray for God to draw Americans and Haitians closer to Him! Pray that many would be saved, and that true believers would grow in their faith!

Friday
Pray for a receptive and wise spirit, that teammates would see how God is working in their hearts. Pray for the Lord to prepare them to say goodbye.

Saturday
Pray that God would prepare them to be a light in the US. Pray that teammates would return living transformed lives by what they’ve seen, hungry to share Jesus’ power with all who will listen!

Pray also that God would encourage a “missionary spirit” in Zion, that whether we are “go-ers” or “send-ers” that we all would link arms in sharing His light in the world!

Christianity eXplored: Interview with Dave Steen

Dave and Brenda Steen are long time members at Zion. Dave, who has served Zion’s Consistory, agreed to talk about what God was doing through Christianity eXplored.

This interview originally ran in the January 2013 issue of Zion’s Chronicles.celogocrun

Zion Chronicles: What is Christianity eXplored? When people visit, what should they expect?

Dave Steen: Christianity eXplored takes a person through the Gospel of Mark. It is designed to give you a glimpse of who Jesus is and why it is important He came to earth for each of us. Participants get as involved as they are comfortable. Nobody has to sing or pray, read, or even comment if they aren’t comfortable doing any of those. You can sit and listen the whole time if that is your comfort zone. It is meant to be a relaxed atmosphere where you feel free to ask questions about Jesus and being a Christian. Continue reading
