Defend Against Anti-Christ

One of our adult Sunday school classes has been working through the biblical book of Revelation, learning about eschatology (“end times”), and what Christians ought to believe and practice to be faithful to the Lord Almighty in those challenging times.

One topic we have not gotten to in great detail yet is the subject of the Antichrist. Mentioned in a few different passages – including II Thessalonians, I John, and Revelation – the idea of Antichrist inspires curiosity, fear, and a whole host of emotions in Christians. Especially through Hollywood, speculation about Antichrist tend toward unbiblical ideas that do not help believers face these ideas with boldness, fearlessness, and faithfulness.

Thankfully, God has raised up several teachers of the faith to help us. One such teacher is Dr. Rev. Kim Riddlebarger, pastor of Christ United Reformed Church. Dr. Riddlebarger has written a great deal about end times issues, including A Case of Amillenialism: Understanding the End Times and The Man of Sin: Truth About Antichrist. Both of these books are tremendous aids in helping us understand what God’s Word has to say about these things.

Recently, Dr. Riddlebarger spoke on what the Bible says about Antichrist at Church of the Redeemer. His four talks are:

Lecture 1: Antichrist – Past, Present, or Future Foe?

Lecture 2: Antichrist As A Sign of the End of the Age

Lecture 3: The Two Beasts (Revelation 13)

Lecture 4: “They Came To Life And Reigned With Christ”

You can find more of Dr. Riddlebarger’s writing at his website, as well as all of the recordings here.

Sermon: Healing By Grace from Mark 2

In our sermon series “Mark: Discipleship in Christ Through the Gospel,” only the sick need healing, and those who see themselves as righteous don’t need a Savior. But if we are spiritually paralyzed, how can we help others carry their burdens to Jesus? Come find healing in His grace!

In our sermon series “Mark: Discipleship in Christ Through the Gospel,” Jesus is demonstrated to be a miraculous healer, yet His response to the crowds is baffling to audiences. God’s Faithfulness In Marriage’s Flaws

graceLast Sunday, our Men’s Ministry gathered for our monthly Men’s breakfast where we are working through Disciplines of A Godly Man. Two clips we employed were helpful to see God’s power of grace to train us in our discipline of faith with our marriages. Both of these clips are a result of Paul Tripp Ministries, a helpful Reformed pastor and counselor. The first is a testimony of God’s grace to rescue a broken marriage, and the second is great teaching for our flawed spouses!

Don’t forget to check out our other resources for your marriage in God’s grace!

Sermon: Join the New Israel from Mark 1

In our sermon series “Mark: Discipleship in Christ Through the Gospel,” we learn that Jesus is re-living the most important events of redemptive history for our salvation. As He called the first disciples, we must now answer: will we leave all to follow Him?

Leave Your Nets to Follow Jesus

In our sermon yesterday, the Holy Spirit challenged us from the Gospel of Mark with what Jesus said to the first disciples to leave all and follow Him.
Mark1_InstagramOne helpful thought on this issue comes from Baptist pastor and missions-proponent David Platt. He comments on this radical way of following Jesus:

This is where we need to pause to consider whether we’re starting to redefine Christianity. We have to give up everything we have to follow Jesus. But slowly, subtly, we have reduced following Jesus to the idea of following Jesus.

We do this in all sorts of ways. We rationalize Jesus’ demanding teachings: “Of course, Jesus wasn’t actually telling you to abandon your family. And of course, He wasn’t really saying to leave everything behind to follow Him.”

While it’s true that Jesus didn’t-and doesn’t-require everyone to leave their father and their occupation to follow Him, He does require absolute obedience and commitment. Rather than joyfully embracing His call, we have the self-serving tendency to water it down to be theoretical sacrifice and hypothetical abandonment. We want to follow a Jesus that doesn’t require anything of us.

In essence, we’ve redefined Christianity. We’ve given in to the dangerous temptation to take the Jesus of the Bible and twist Him into a version of Jesus we’re more comfortable with. It’s a Jesus who’s OK with our materialism, fine with nominal devotion that doesn’t require any sacrifice, and pleased with a brand of faith that requires attendance on Sunday but no real commitment in day-to-day life.

But I wonder if I could help you push through the haze of self-justification and ask a simple question as we study the words of Christ together: What if He was actually serious?

Jesus does not require the same kind of obedience from every one of His followers, but as Platt reminds us, He does require the same radical willingness to sacrifice and commitment to His kingdom. Has the Gospel gripped you to the extent that you are willing to leave everything for Him? May that be increasingly true of us at Zion!

All Church Activities Canceled

cancellation

All Zion activities have been canceled

Due to inclement weather, many of our church family are snowed in, and it would be dangerous for many others. So, please stay safe with the blowing snow, and spend your Sunday honoring Jesus Christ in everything, especially on this day of rest that He gives us!

We will plan for Communion to be next Sunday, February 8. Please forward this news or call those who may not have email. Texts and emails to others are appreciated to get the word out!

Thinking about how to honor God with the Super Bowl? Plenty of information here.

May the Lord richly bless you in His Son, Christ Jesus the Lord, this day as you walk by His Spirit!
