Pray For VBS Week!

Our week of Vacation Bible school at Zion is in full swing! We are thankful for over twenty volunteers, countless donations, and nearly seventy young people in attendance. God is good! But we want this week to count for eternity. And we cannot do THAT on our own – we need His divine grace. So would you join us in praying for us?

We know that God loves to hear His people calling to Him in child-like dependence. Please join us in taking a little time each week to lift up the following needs to the Lord above:

Pray for God to change lives. Ask the Lord that each heart that hears about Jesus, the truth of His Word, and the hope of the Gospel would be changed! Pray for many to trust Christ, maybe for the very first time! Plead with the Lord to “give ears to hear” His truth, and strengthen the faith of those who are listening who already follow Christ. Ask that the truth of Scripture would transform minds and renew boys and girls to be new creations in Christ. Pray that even volunteers would find their own faith strengthened by serving.

Pray for VBS logistics and success. Ask God to grant smooth operations for all the events, that supplies would work and hold out, and that schedules would come together. Pray for all the volunteers, those traveling to drop off/pick up students, and more.

Pray for our reputation in our community. We want Garner, Hancock county, and north Iowa to know that Zion is here as servants of Jesus, and that we can be trusted with their kids and family members for an awesome week learning so much about Jesus! Pray for the conversations that follow VBS, and that both kids and parents would be motivated to put Jesus first in their lives.

Pray for our volunteers and helpers. So much of this week’s success is how God will work through adults, teens, and helpers behind the scenes. Pray for servant hearts with no grumbling or complaining. Pray that the Spirit would give us grace for when the unexpected comes up, or we need to make a last minute change. Ask the Lord of the Harvest to be sanctifying our volunteers, and drawing them to Jesus this week.

Pray for those who are hurting. VBS is so much fun! But many of the kids who attend, or volunteers who help, have real lives going on that might involve hurt and heartache. Pray the Lord would lift them up on eagle’s wings. Ask God to not allow the Devil to distract kids from the good news of Jesus. Plead with the Lord to send His Spirit so that VBS is used in their lives – with friends, fun, and the hope of Christ – to bless them in the midst of their hurting.

Pray for Zion to be a church that always reaches out. VBS might be one week, but there are always people who need Jesus! Who can you be praying for, inviting to worship, or setting up a Bible study or service project to bless others? Ask the Lord to give you opportunities to be an ambassador for Christ!

Movie: His Only Son at the Avery!

This weekend, the Avery Theater is showing His Only Son! Find out more about the movie at Plugged In.

We can reach out to our community, as well as enjoy this motion picture, since admission is FREE on Saturday, May 13! Instead of paying for a ticket, we recommend bringing a donation for God’s Pantry – personal care items or paper products are recommended, but not required.

The movie asks many wonderful questions about grace, the meaning of sacrifice, and helps us have conversations about what God the Father was willing to undergo with God the Son by the help of God the Spirit. Is there a friend or neighbor you’d like to invite to the movie? Is there a conversation God is prompting you to have with someone about this movie?

Praise God that when Abraham brought his only son Isaac, God provided a sacrifice – a ram in the thicket. But even greater glory goes to the Lord for providing the greatest sacrifice – His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ!

An Apology That Changed Everything

One ministry that has blessed our pastor and been used in our church is Peacemaker Ministries and Relational Wisdom 360, both by Ken Sande. Many ministries appeal to the Bible, but often just sprinkle a few verses on their work. We appreciate Peacemaker and RW360 for going to the very core of God’s truth in Scripture, and then applying the principles to help God’s people. We want be the kind of peacemakers Jesus commanded in the Sermon on the Mount!

Sometimes conflict and peacemaking is so uncomfortable, we might wish it didn’t even happen. Read Ken Sande’s account of how this happened to him while in graduate school, and be encouraged how God can use our worst conflicts for His glory. (Side note: Pastor Brian knows the pastor’s daughter in the story below. God is still using this church!)

When Ken Sande was in Law School, he was bringing his friend Cindy to church:

“Cindy was struggling in her spiritual life and disillusioned with her church. Thinking she might benefit from my church, I had invited her to worship with me one Sunday. Moments after we took our seats, Pastor Erbele surprised everyone. He called for the attention of the congregation and asked one of the elders to come forward. Suddenly I remembered that these two men had had a heated discussion during the previous week’s Sunday school class. “On no!” I thought. “Pastor is going to rebuke him in front of the whole church!” I was already embarrassed as my pastor continued.“As most of you know,” he said, “Kent and I had an argument during Sunday school last week. Our emotions got out of hand, and we said some things that should have been discussed in private.” As I thought of the first impression Cindy must be getting, my stomach sank, “Of all the days to bring someone to church,” I thought, “why did I pick this one?”

I was sure this incident would discourage Cindy and destroy her respect for my pastor. Pastor Erbele put his arm around Kent’s shoulders and went on. “We want you to know that we met later that afternoon to resolve our differences. By God’s grace, we came to understand each other better, and we were fully reconciled. But we need to tell you how sorry we are for disrupting the unity of this fellowship, and we ask for your forgiveness for the poor example we gave last week.” Many eyes were filled with tears as Kent made a similar statement. Unfortunately, I was so worried about what Cindy was thinking that I missed the significance of what was happening. Making a nervous comment to Cindy, I opened the hymnal to our first song and hoped she would forget about the whole incident. The rest of the service was a blur, and before long I was driving her home. We made light conversation for a few minutes, but eventually Cindy referred to what had happened: “I still can’t believe what your pastor did this morning. I’ve never seen a minister do something like that. Could I come back next week?”

During subsequent visits, Cindy listened intently when my pastor spoke. Having seen the power of the gospel in his life, she was eager to hear about the salvation and freedom she could experience by trusting in Jesus. Within a month, she committed her life to Christ and made our church her spiritual home.”

Praise God for how He used a terrible conflict in a church to truly bless Cindy’s life! Where is Jesus calling you to be a peacemaker? Do you remember His promised blessings when we make peace (Matthew 5:9)? Let’s continue to strive – not to sweep conflict under the rug – but to bring it out into the open to give glory to Christ!

God’s Message For You At Prom

Prom can be stressful: how to construct the perfect ask. Finding the perfect dress. Its a lot.

But Jesus truly is perfect, and He wants you keep your eyes on Him, even during prom! Here’s some resources to think about and use, to help you have the best prom:

Here’s three Bible verses to keep from going crazy at this year’s prom or after party:

1. Do not be conformed by the patterns of this world. Romans 12:12

Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it.

As we consider the whole prom scene, let’s not just accept things as “that’s the way it’s done.” Instead, let’s fix our eyes on Jesus and ask, “Is this really important? Or does culture just say that it is? Would it glorify God?”

Most of the prom dresses out there seem like “culture dragging us down to their level of immaturity” and not exactly what God really wants Christian girls to be wearing or Christian boys to see their dates wearing.
