Christ has come! Christ is coming again!
The Latin word adventus simply means “coming;” it refers to the appearance of God incarnate and bringing the Kingdom’s salvation to planet Earth. This Advent season, we want to focus on the Gift the Father has sent in the coming of Jesus, and that He is coming again! The Old Testament believers awaited their coming Messiah. We join in their spiritual longing when we sing Advent hymns like “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.” However, our lives have been transformed because Jesus has come; and in Him we live and move and have our being.
What is Advent, and why do we recognize it at Zion? Read more about the what of Advent here. Is it wise for Christians who desire for God’s Word to reform our worship and lives to recognize Advent? You can learn more about that important truth by reading this.
Advent 2025: For Us And For Our Salvation
“His coming forth is from of old, from ancient days” the prophet Micah foretold (5:2). Our faith is ancient: from the prophecy of the Messiah by the Hebrew prophets, to Christian testimony in the Roman Empire. Christians have contended for the faith “once for all delivered” (Jude 3 – 5), and the Nicene Creed reminds us of our ancient testimony.
For one thousand, seven hundred years, the Nicene Creed has been used to show what Christians have believed, that Jesus Christ is “very God and very Man.” We believe:
God from God,
Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made;
of the same essence as the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and was made man.
Why did Jesus come? Why did the Father send the Son? Why did the Spirit overshadow the virgin Mary?
For us. For our salvation.
Each Lord’s Day in Advent we will consider the first and second comings of Christ, how the babe Jesus of Bethlehem is truly God and truly Man, and how salvation is coming for you. Our worship service has a slightly different order and feel during Advent as well. Read about the liturgy here.
